Beyond the Hedge

Mairi Craw        Scottish author Mairi Craw graduated with an MA in English Literature and History of Fine Art from Glasgow University. She worked for BBC World Service in London before starting her own publicity and design business which she ran from home for ten years.
Beyond the Hedge, the first of a trilogy of reality-based fantasy novels inspired by her childhood in Scotland, was written while she was living in Dorset in the south of England with her family and a host of animals, many of whom feature in her work.
Mairi moved to the Pyrénées-Orientales in southern France at the end of January 2007 where she continues work on Between Two Worlds, the second novel in the trilogy. By Another Route, the third in the series, will be set in and around the village where Mairi now lives.
"I realised I'd come home when I chanced upon Taurinya which nestles in the foothills of Le Canigou, the sacred mountain of the Catalans. It's a magical setting and so inspirational; it felt preordained that I should live in this mystical place. There's a beautiful rocky river at the foot of the village which reminds me of Scotland. It's an ideal spot for elves and sprites to have wonderful adventures with Licorne de Taurinya, the resident French unicorn. My Scottish fairy folk will feel right at home here with their Catalan counterparts."
David Rintoul's magnificent dramatised reading of Beyond the Hedge has been broadcast twice since it was published in November 2005 by Channel 4's digital radio station Oneword.

"...Some of the most famous imaginative worlds grew over a series of novels - Tolkien, CS Lewis and JK Rowling are just three authors whose masterpieces began with the germ of an idea and grew. But it's rare for an entire world to appear fully formed in Volume 1..."
(Paul Kent, editor beautifulsounds)

Eleven-year-old Sandy Henderson lives a carefree life with her family in Irvine, a quiet port on Scotland's south-west coast, unaware that the parallel world of Sylvania lies beyond a huge hedge at the bottom of their overgrown garden.
When her beloved cat, Leo, tumbles headlong into this enchanted land, while they're exploring an unfamiliar part of the orchard, Sandy undertakes a dangerous journey to bring him home again.
In the company of Jock, a handsome, swaggering crow, and the Hendersons' haughty Siamese cat, Jamie, Sandy encounters a host of colourful characters, all of whom have the power of speech. There's Pongo, the hairiest dog imaginable, master of quips and 'one-liners', Lorimer, an outrageous lobster who lives by the motto 'Dress to Thrill!', and self-serving 'Captain' Pestilence Grimshaw who joins forces with Maligna the Harpie, the monstrous entity whose sole preoccupation is the destruction of everything Sylvanians hold dear.
Sandy quickly discovers that Scottish fairy folk are witty, resourceful and tenacious, even when faced with evil on an unprecedented scale.
Will she be in time to save Leo? And will Sandy and her companions ever see Scotland again?
